AMD introduced several powerful laptop mobile processors based on Zen2 this year. Many people have been surprised by the performance of these processors. Why?

I got Maibook P748 this time (configuration: RTX2060+4800H, memory: 16GB, and storage capacity: 512GB). It is a laptop equipped with the latest 4800H processor of AMD, and RTX2060, NVIDIA mid-range graphics card that supports ray tracing. Then how do they work in combination? Can it “hit” Intel? Let’s have a look.

Maibook P748 Unpacking

The package is simple, and it is easy to take out the laptop from the box.

There is also a film on side B, and the case is made of matte material with acceptable hand feeling. It is all plastic, so I think it’s thin at first sight.

The whole laptop is mainly of the main keynote of black, oriented at gaming.

The overall design is reasonable at first sight, but I can see the touchpad is located in a relatively strange position. I’ll explain the actual usage later.

One thing I like is that the laptop with such size, not only has a very wide palm rest, but also has a full-size keyboard, with improved universality.

4000 series CPU has its own core graphics, so we can see that the logo of RTX and Radeon graphics cards are located on the same position.

Different from previous laptops, Maibook P748 has an additional button on the right side of the power button, whose specific purpose will be explained later.

As the mobile graphics card of RTX of this generation is MAX-Q discrete graphics card, the thickness is well controlled, which is about 25mm at the joining part, and 30mm at the thickest part.

The bezel of the screen side is narrow. The upper bezel is wider as there is a camera. It is well controlled in design.

The laptop weighs 2.5kg. If it is put in a backpack with a power adapter, the weight is not very heavy.

The 5.5mm connector produced by FSP is used for the power supply with good universality and rated power of 180W. It seems to be a product from Taiwan not Dongguan.

The laptop has abundant interfaces, including one complete SD card slot and two USB3.0 interfaces. Surprisingly, in addition to one HDMI, there are also two DP interfaces, which provide the possibility of three-modes combined display. Type-C interface provided can be compatible with the existing portable solid state disk. USB2.0 interface on the left is used to connect the additional keyboard & mouse.

The top camera only plays the role of camera shooting, but is incompatible with Windows Hello, which is a pity. The next generation can be compatible with Windows Hello.

Heat dissipation layout is very clear, and we can see two thin turbofans ventilating at the bottom through heat emission holes.

Air comes out from the rear and side, and the heat dissipation performance is not bad by visual inspection. Of course, the actual test should prevail.

Internal Construction and Description

Unscrew all screws at the bottom to open the main body. The mold design presents “Taiwan style”.

Some clips are used to help fix side D, and they may not be broken after being removed for several times.

After removing the rear cover, I can see its workmanship is good. I don’t see obvious burr or mold design problems. Even demolding is good.

In order to control the weight, the battery of this laptop is not very big, and I find there is a large vacancy on the left side of the battery. Maybe the laptop has a better model or version.

The laptop has a self-contained solid state disk of         BIWIN, equipped with genuine Win10 home edition and Office set (for beginners).

There are two goldkey memories. I’m not very familiar with the brand, and it is a local brand of Taiwan.

Intel is still No.1 in Wifi and Bluetooth module. 3168NGW is a product of the first quarter of 2016 with the highest speed of 433Mhz. Unfortunately, it is not equipped with Wifi6. However, the gaming laptop should be connected with wired network most of the time.

For the fans produced by the famous SUNON, I would have some expectations of the actual noise.

User Experience and Introduction to
Self-contained Software

In most cases, keyboard & mouse will be connected, but sometimes the keyboard of the laptop will be preferred. The touchpad on the palm rest of the laptop will actually affect the usage of the keyboard in the actual test.

But fortunately it has a very convenient measure: As long as you click the top left corner, you will disable the touchpad easily.

The power design is very good. 90° connectors are mainly used, whose advantage is that the power supply can be connected in the smallest space when there is a wall behind the laptop. It is very convenient  for those who live in dormitories with limited space on the desktop.

The key travel of the keyboard is long, and there is adjustable backlight. It is convenient.

There is a GamingCenterU control software, which serves as the control center of the laptop, able to monitor performance and temperature. There is also power saving mode and keyboard lighting effect.

One great thing is the screen can also be configured through this software. In addition to brightness and contrast, it can also adjust the white balance and color temperature.

In operating mode you can choose hardware performance and control fans.

Monitoring functions are complete but not complex. Through this page, we can see the network usage, memory usage and CPU temperature, etc. For users who do not use AIDA64 or Afterburner or other software without monitoring functions, this self-contained tool is convenient.

4800H Platform Performance Test

4800H is a mid-to-high end processor of AMD, with excellent 45W TDP. In this TDP, it offers single core performance of at most 4.2Ghz and 3.9Ghz under the full core.

Its core voltage is different from the low voltage laptop, and is higher than Intel. It even reaches the level of desktop U. 7nm technology cannot be surpassed by Intel. This built-in processor is step 1 style.

BIOS of AMI is a version in late June. The OEM is THTF.

4800H has a built-in core graphics card and is not shielded with an discrete graphics card. This core graphics card has 448 SPs and is also 7nm. The performance is limited but suitable for energy consumption reduction.

The configuration and standby temperature of the test platform are as follows: The ambient temperature is 25°C.

Test theoretical scores by Chess at first. The score of 4800H is 28006, which is amazing.

With control software, we can see the One-Key OC function on the computer. After pressing the CPU Power Boost with its own control software and OC button besides the power button, full core frequency improves by 100Mhz. There are three button switching modes, respectively Turbo, Gaming, and Office.

We can see that the originally highest full core frequency of 3.9Ghz has been exceeded now from the resource manager.

After retesting in Chess, the performance is obviously improved in numerical value.

Test by the built-in tool of the CPU-Z . Due to the low frequency, we can see single core score is obviously lower in the built-in tool test score of the CPU-Z. But the multiple core performance is close to the latest G10 desktop processor 10700K. The latter is a desktop processor with double and more TDP.

It is strange that the score of the 4800H in WinRAR performance test is low in this link. I think it may be linked with memory. Of course, another possible reason is that the basic frequency is not very high.

In the benchmark test of 7-ZIP, the overall score of 4800H in this link is 65826MIPS. R7-4800H has obvious advantages in 7-ZIP, able to catch up with several other desktop U.

I the productivity test link, CineBench R15 and CineBench R20 are tested at first. We can see that the single core performance of 4800H is significantly improved compared with G1 8-core Ryzen. In terms of single thread of C15, it is not very popular. But for the multiple threads, the performance is faster than 9700K which has double TDP and 700Mhz higher frequency. Therefore, the rendering performance of multiple cores is very powerful.

For the score of X265 test, the average frame of this processor is 32.5FPS, not very different from other desktop processors with 8 scores. The performance gap is controlled at about 20%.

In FireStrike Extreme and TimeSpy of 3DMARK, the performance of 4800H is very good. It can be seen that CPU performance far exceeds 9700K with 8C8T. The score difference is related to frequency, which is calculated as about 20% (1.0Ghz).

Due to Zen2, the memory of 4800H is somewhat not enough. But it’s OK, as it is equipped with two DDR4 memories with 3200Mhz, and memory chips are from famous manufacturer Hynix.

The time series of the memory is ordinary, only C22. But it makes up for Zen2 to some extent.

Graphics Card Performance And Game Performance Test

In a certain sense, this laptop is a combination of NVIDIA and AMD. There is one RTX2060, 6GB video memory in P748. This RTX ray tracing card for beginners should be different from the desktop computer in terms of the performance of the laptop.

3DMARK is used for test at first. It gets 7,969 scores in Fire Strike Extreme.

It gets 3,685 scores in Port Royal for testing ray tracing performance.

It gets 6,839 scores in TimeSpy.

Game is used for actual test. In Hardspace: Shipbreaker, the average FPS is above 80 in case that special effects are completely turned on.

Online games have higher requirements for CPU and memory than graphics card. Counter-Strike: Global Mission has such features. We can see from the test that FPS fluctuates greatly. The average frame of full height special effects is above 120FPS but the frequency does not reach 144Hz.

The same is true with League of Legends. It has high requirements for memory performance, so AMD processor platform is not very “popular”. Too high time series has impacted the memory performance to some extent. The average frame is above 105FPS, but the frame number is stable.

Then test PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. It is a game with the most comprehensive performance requirement. The usage rate of CUP at this time is increased to 58% and it is running under the full core 4.0Ghz. In order to make the frames considerable, I set it to middle special effect.

The final score is 113FPS, which ensures smooth gaming of players.

Brief Summary

The occupancy rate of many game graphics cards is not high, so I can infer that this computer is very good in game performance. The memory may need to be replaced to one with lower delay/higher frequency so that the performance will be better. In other words, the self-contained C22 time series memory caused bottleneck of game performance.

Screen Test

Maibook P748 has its own display screen with a resolution of 1080P and a refresh rate of 144Hz. The screen supplier is BOE.

Firstly, use UFOTest to test the screen delay. I set it as 2560Pixel per second. We can see that there is double image of single images. It will fades greatly in test 2 and test 3.

DisplayCal and ColorMunki spectrophotometers are used to evaluate the color performance of the screen.

After the test, we can know that the sRGB color gamut volume of this screen is above 95%, but it is only 1.39 at most for DeltaE of P748 screen.

The color gamut in the green part exceeds sRGB, but it is insufficient in the red part.

From the calibration curve, RGB of the screen fluctuates less, and there isn’t very severe offset.

Then look at the tone response curve, and we can see that RGB exceeds the theoretical value under lower brightness, while it is slightly lower than the theoretical value under middle and high brightness. From the above data, this laptop will not have severe color cast for ordinary users even it has no late calibration (of course, it performs better after color correction).

Hard Disk and Interface Test

One 512GB solid state disk produced by BIWIN, built in Maibook P748 has a total of two NVME protocol interfaces. Users can expand it by themselves. Hard disk temperature is about 38°C some time after boosting.

I used AS SSD Benchmark and CrystalDiskMark to test the hard disk. It can be seen that the data difference is obvious, so we need to have further understanding. This situation is resulted from different algorithms.

HDTUNE is used for testing. It can be seen that as the built-in cache is not large, it enters “Repetition Side Step” after writing in 15GB. The speed becomes very unstable. The writing in speed of small files may reach 1500MB/s.

Type-C interface is tested for performance. I used ORICO IV300 solid state disk to connect the Type-C interface and then the USB3.0 interface. A total of two tests were conducted.

The reading and writing of Type-C interface with ATTO are evaluated. It can be seen that the reading and writing speed is about 800MB/s and 600MB/s. The reading and writing somewhat hits the upper limit of the interface. The actual speed should be about 1000MB/s, but the performance is enough.

Then use USB3.0 interface on the right of the laptop to test the solid state disk. It can be seen that there are many speed limitations, but it is still close to 400MB/s.

I used one 128GB SD card of Kingston for testing. This card is 170MB standard card. Specific card reader in use can reach this value. Ordinary card reader can also reach 90MB reading.

Test data is ordinary. The performance of the built-in card reader of P748 is limited, and both reading and writing reach the upper limit of 37MB.

There is a small slot point. The card is not of self-push type but of short body time. SD card can only be inserted half.

Power and Noise, Temperature and Battery Use Test

I used a power socket to measure the power under various use conditions. The results are as follows: File copy occurs in the process of copying the file from the external solid state disk to the internal solid disk.

I used AIDA64 to test the pressure of Maibook P748. At room temperature of 25°C, CPU temperature will rise to about 90°C (not select FPU in test).

Then I used Furmark to test GPU temperature, which is stable at 60°C.

The heat emission efficiency is acceptable on the left, right and back. It can be seen that fins reach a high temperature. However, due to the limited heat exchange area, even fan speed is increased, CPU temperature will not be lowered.

The power adapter is forced to dissipate heat, keeping temperature at 50°C and below.

The backlight controller heat on side B screen is high, but it is still controlled within 45°C. As there is no mechanical hard disk, and the heat dissipation control is not bad, temperature of WSAD and palm rest is low.

I tested noise during the running. The noise is about 50DB in general load conditions, such as playing online games, which is higher than that of AC. It is acceptable.

But if you are playing PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds or similar 3A games, fan noise may cover part of game sound under the full load of CPU and graphics card, and sound frequency is high as it is a turbine.

P748 has built-in 4100mAh 3S battery. I tried recording the relationship between battery capacity and time in office applications. Screen brightness is 100% during the use, and room temperature is 25°C.

It can be seen from the chart that battery capacity is lowered evenly. It is estimated that the duration under full capacity is 2h. I don’t feel experience downgrading in office applications when it is unplugged.


Maibook P748 laptop is acceptable in both design and quality, in line with the conventional quality of the price level. In terms of use, I don’t feel any impropriety. The double-click disabling function design of the touchpad is very practical, otherwise unintended activation is annoying.

R7-4800H processor will surprise us with the test! The processor TDP 45W is far lower than desktop U, which is attributable to the excellent design of Zen2. With 7nm advantage, 4800H surpasses numerous processors with its power consumption and performance ratio (the lower it is, the better it is). It is one of the most surprising products this year.

As a gaming laptop, Maibook P748 is launched in the market with a good cost performance. It supports smooth running of common online games, and can make many 3A games with high requirements close to 90FPS under the middle special effects. It weighs only 2.5kg. If you are a player, but you need to consider portability and use battery occasionally, I think this laptop can meet your demands.
